Honey for a cough and sore throat: the home remedy that actually works
Most "natural cures" are wishful thinking. Honey is the rare exception โ it's one of the few home remedies that genuinely helps with a cough, and there's real research to back it.
When a cough keeps you up at night, the kitchen cupboard might beat the pharmacy. Honey has been used for sore throats for thousands of years, and modern studies agree: for soothing a cough, especially at night, a spoonful of honey can work as well as some over-the-counter cough remedies.
Why honey helps
Honey is thick and coats the throat, which soothes irritation and calms the urge to cough. It also has mild antibacterial properties. It won't cure the cold or infection causing your cough โ but it makes you more comfortable while your body heals, which is exactly what most cough medicines do too.
How to use honey for a cough
- Straight: 1โ2 teaspoons of plain honey, especially before bed.
- In a warm drink: stir into warm (not boiling) water or herbal tea with a squeeze of lemon.
- With ginger: honey + fresh ginger in warm water soothes a scratchy throat (see our ginger guide).

Honey + lemon: the classic combo
Warm water, honey and lemon is a comforting, time-tested mix. The honey soothes, the warm liquid loosens congestion, and the lemon adds a little vitamin C and flavour that makes you sip more. It's simple and it works for symptom relief.
The bottom line
Honey is a genuine home-remedy win: cheap, pleasant, and actually shown to ease a cough and sore throat. Keep it for symptom relief, skip it for babies, and see a doctor if things drag on. Sometimes the old remedies earn their reputation.
